Finding missing factors
The product of two whole numbers is defined as the multiple. Multiples appear in the number’s multiplication chart. Multiplication chart serves as an easy way for kids to find the answers to missing factor expression. All they need to do is find one of the factors at the top of the chart, scan down until they find the product (multiple), and then move their finger to the left until they find the missing factor.
How to find the missing factor
For example, let's consider the number 12:
The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12. Why?
1 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 1 = 12 with no remainder.
2 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 2 = 6 with no remainder.
3 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 3 = 4 with no remainder.
4 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 4 = 3 with no remainder.
6 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 6 = 2 with no remainder.
12 is a factor of 12 because 12 ÷ 12 = 1 with no remainder.
Notice, that the factors are all positive integers, and they include both 1 and the number itself (12 in this case). This is because every number is divisible by 1 and itself.

Although finding factors and multiples are not new concepts, since kids have been skip counting and multiplying for a couple of years by the time this is introduced, the words are new.
So if you're preparing to introduce finding factors or finding multiples and the least common multiple, I recommend reviewing some basics of multiplication first. Remind kids what multiplication represents and how it relates to division.
Provide them with some background so they understand that the term MISSING FACTOR isn't a new idea, but rather a new word for a concept they already know.
