What is LCM:
The Least Common Multiple (LCM) of two numbers is the lowest possible number that can be divisible by both numbers.
Sample of the Least Common Multiple of 2 numbers
For example, let's find the LCM of 4 and 6:
Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, ...
Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, ...
From the lists of multiples, we can see that 12 is the smallest multiple that both 4 and 6 share. Therefore, the LCM of 4 and 6 is 12.
Least Common Multiple example: 3 numbers
For example, let's find the LCM of 3, 4 and 5:
Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ... 60, 63 ...
Multiples of 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ...60, 64, ...
Multiples of 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, ... 60, 65, 70 ...
The smallest number that is common to all three lists is 60. Therefore, the LCM of 3, 4, and 5 is 60.
How to find the LCM: methods
There are different methods to determine the LCM of a set of numbers. We can find the LCM using listing method (see above), prime factorization method and using the GCD.
The first method is the listing the multiples method. To use this method, list the multiples of each number and identify the first common multiple for all the numbers as we used in the previous examples:
1) Listing the multiples:
- List Multiples: List the multiples of each number until you find a common multiple.
- Identify the Least: Identify the least (the smallest in value) number that is a multiple of each.
A multiplication chart can be very useful when listing multiples to find LCM. Multiplication chart (interactive or printable) serves as a quick reference, which allows learners to glance at the multiples of a number without having to calculate each one individually.
2) Prime Factorization Method
Prime Factorization Method involves factoring each number into its prime factors and then taking the highest power of each prime factor that appears in any of the factorizations. The product of these powers is the LCM. For example, let’s find the LCM of 12 and 18 using the Prime Factorisation Method:
- Find the prime factors of each number: The prime factors of 12 are 2 and 3 (12 = 2 × 2 × 3). The prime factors of 18 are 2 and 3 (18 = 2 × 3 × 3).
- The highest power of 2 that appears in either number is 22 = 4. The highest power of 3 that appears in either number is 32 = 9.
- The LCM of 12 and 18 is 22 × 32 = 36.
3) Using the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor):
If you know the GCD of the numbers, you can use the formula:
LCM(a, b) = (|a * b|) / GCD(a, b).
For example, if GCD(15, 25) = 5, then LCM(15, 25) = (15 * 25) / 5 = 75.
This formula can be extended to more than two numbers.
When you want to find the least common multiple, choose the method that you find most convenient for the given numbers and your preferences. If you're looking for help with how to find the least common multiple, watch this video o YouTube or this video.

As I mentioned above, one of the methods to find LCM is to use Prime Factorization Method. This method involves factoring a number into factors. You can practice finding the factors of a given number is this missing factor BINGO game.
Least common multiple practice
This least common multiple game is an online multiplication game. The goal of the game is to correctly identify the least common multiple of two numbers.
It's important to note that the LCM is used in various mathematical problems, especially when working with fractions with different denominators.
