Mystery Number Riddle Game

Number Ridle ´Crack the Lock´ is a logic-based puzzle game designed to strengthen reasoning and number sense skills.

Your goal is to discover a hidden three-digit code using only the clues provided. Each clue tells you how many digits are correct and whether they are in the right or wrong place. By analyzing all five clues together, you must determine the one correct combination that unlocks the code.

How to Solve this Number Riddle Puzzle (Step by Step)

For step by step guide watch this video on You Tube.

# Quick Method
  1. Mark forbidden digits. Any clue that says “Nothing is correct” eliminates all 3 digits from the code.
  2. Collect “in-code” digits. Clues that say “One number is correct …” or “Two numbers are correct …” tell you which digits must appear in the code (but watch their positions!).
  3. Build position rules.
    • Right place ⇒ that digit is fixed in that position.
    • Wrong place ⇒ that digit cannot be in that position.
  4. Use the 2-correct-wrong-place clue. It gives you two exact digits of the code and forbids their shown positions.
  5. Test candidates. Try only 3-digit combinations using the allowed digits and positions. Each candidate must satisfy all clues simultaneously.

# Example of Number Riddle Game

Suppose the clues are:

  • 682 – One number is correct and in the right place
  • 614 – One number is correct but in the wrong place
  • 206 – Two numbers are correct but in the wrong place
  • 738 – Nothing is correct
  • 780 – One number is correct but in the wrong place
  1. Eliminate digits from “Nothing is correct”.
    738 ⇒ digits 7, 3, 8 are not in the code.
  2. Use “Two correct but wrong place”.
206 ⇒ exactly two of {2, 0, 6} are in the code, but none is in the shown position.
  3. Check the other clues for consistency.
    • 780 says one digit is correct but wrong place. 7 and 8 are banned ⇒ the correct digit here must be 0, but not in 3rd position ⇒ 0 is in the code and cannot be 3rd.
    • From 206, 0 cannot be in 2nd either (wrong place) ⇒ 0 is 1st or 0 is 3rd. Combined with the previous line, 0 cannot be 3rd ⇒ 0 is 1st is still possible, but keep checking.
    • 682 says one correct & right place. 8 is banned ⇒ either 6 (pos1) is correct or 2 (pos3) is correct (but not both).
  4. Pin positions with contradictions.
    • From 206 (two correct, all in wrong places): 6 is not pos3, 0 is not pos2, 2 is not pos1.
    • From 614 (one correct but wrong place) and 8/7/3 banned: only {6,1,4} remain; exactly one of 6 or 4 is in the code (not 1) and it’s in a different position than shown.
  5. Narrow down the set of digits.
Combine the info: the code uses 6 and 2 (from the clues above) and 0 (from 780). So the three digits are {6, 2, 0}.
  6. Place them.
    • From 206 (wrong places): 2 ≠ pos1, 0 ≠ pos2, 6 ≠ pos3.
    • From 682 (one right, right place) and 8 banned ⇒ either 6 is pos1 or 2 is pos3 (but not both).
    • Try 6 in pos1 ⇒ remaining {2,0} in pos2/pos3. From earlier: 0 ≠ pos2 ⇒ 0 must be pos3 and 2 must be pos2.

    Solution: 620 (fits every clue).

# Tips & Strategies for solving this riddle with numbers

  • Start with the strongest clues: “Nothing is correct” and “Two correct but wrong place”. They cut the search space fastest.
  • Make a tiny position table: For each digit, note possible positions (✓) and forbidden ones (×). Cross out positions as you learn “wrong place”.
  • Test only viable candidates: Once you know the 3 digits, there are only 6 permutations. Check each against all clues.
  • If your page’s version allows it, use the “Check” button to verify candidates quickly—then compare against all clues to understand why a candidate fails.
